Global Carbon Cycle Research Support Scientist Needed in Woods Hole, MA
To apply: Send a resume and transcripts to HR@integratedstatistics.com
Integrated Statistics is looking for someone to work with USGS in Woods Hole to provide technical support for the Geochemical Carbon Fluxes project. The project seeks to understand carbon fluxes in hydrologic and geologic processes. Hydrological, geological, chemical and biological data are collected and applied to the quantification of carbon fluxes and their relation to environmental parameters, particularly atmospheric carbon dioxide, climate, and hydrologic phenomena.
Background
The Geochemical Carbon Fluxes project conducts research on atmospheric carbon dioxide and the global carbon cycle. Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and the increasing use of fossil fuels have led to concern for the future effects of atmospheric carbon dioxide on global climate. This project attempts to understand both human impacts and the evidence for past and present natural changes in global carbon fluxes. The project is administered as part of a national program of research on global environmental change. The project shares space in Woods Hole with other scientists of the USGS Woods Hole Field Center on the campus of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Recent research includes field and laboratory studies, analysis of land cover history, and computer modeling. Extensive collaborative possibilities exist through interactions with other research institutions in the Woods Hole area.
Scope of Work
The work will span a broad range of assignments in data analysis and support for field and laboratory studies, literature searching, outreach activities, and other miscellaneous duties normally performed by project scientists. In the office, work will include processing and analysis of data, literature searching, drafting of sections of technical reports, and preparation of outreach materials. In the field and the laboratory, the work will involve collection and analysis of samples, design and performance of experiments, standard maintenance procedures, and monitoring and evaluation of equipment performance. This work is inherently interdisciplinary, and involves extensive cooperation with other USGS research projects, other Federal agencies, and non-government researchers. The work requires adherence to applicable safety and security regulations.
Work Requirements
· Professional knowledge of the principles, theories, practices, and established methodologies of mathematics or natural science, equivalent to the attainment of a master's degree
· Professional knowledge and skill in the use of computers and analytical instruments.
· Knowledge of techniques used in data analysis, including GIS
· Experience in multiple operating system environments (Windows, Mac) and familiarity with software such as Microsoft Access and ArcGIS
· Ability to interact with interdisciplinary research teams, communicate verbally, write sections of reports, and maintain comprehensive and legible notes in an organized fashion
· knowledge and competence in technical library research
· Knowledge of applicable safety regulations and procedures in field and laboratory work.
Deliverables
The primary deliverables for this work are products resulting from the processing and analysis of carbon fluxes and other data collected by this project, as well as products resulting from literature searching in support of project research. These products will include maps, graphical output, derivative analytical products such as correlations, trends, and model/data comparisons, and written summaries of project results or background information from the literature. Particular deliverables for field work and laboratory work will include the collection of necessary data and the keeping of accurate and complete written notes. Outreach deliverables will include making contacts with collaborators and preparing materials for communication with both scientist and non-scientists.
Hourly Wage: $20-$24.85/hour + benefits including health, dental, retirement, paid vacation, sick and federal holidays
