Integrated Statistics is seeking a Data Editor to
assist NOAA’s Northeast Fishery Observer Program (NEFOP), a division of the Northeast
Fisheries Science Center’s (NEFSC), Fisheries Sampling Branch (FSB). The FSB collects, processes, manages, and
provides fishery dependent data and biological samples obtained from fishing
vessels and the Data Editor is expected to have an interest in fishery science,
fishery management and a general knowledge of analytical techniques.
Duties:
Review
raw data logs for completeness and accuracy. Contact observers to verify
inconsistencies and solve data recording problems as needed.
Maintain
records on individual observer performance to be used in assessing overall data
quality and schedules observer debriefings as necessary.
Complete
bonus evaluations on a per trip basis.
Submit weekly reports on editing progress to COTR.
Keep
lead editor and Data Manager informed of important and serious data recording
issues.
Assist
with routine audits and checks on database. This will include ‘final check’
evaluation whereby critical fields of raw data are compared to master data.
Assist
with preparations for Observer Trainings including observer exercises, homework
assignments, workshops, quizzes, exams and presentations as needed.
Deploy
aboard commercial fishing vessels (single day and multi-day trips) to become
familiar with observer duties at sea as needed.
Compare
information on trips with the OBSCON database and make corrections as
necessary.
Distribute
trips and age structure samples to other data editors or appropriate staff.
Track
trips (including industry funded scallop trips) and confirm that all trips are
received.
Assist
FSB staff with OBSCON related tasks.
Prepare
photocopies of trips along with a data release request for review by FSB staff
prior to mailing to vessel owner(s).
Qualifications:
Data Editor I or I+-:
a. B.S. degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries, or a related field
b. Experience with NEFOP data collection and editing protocols, UNIX based computers, networked systems and ORACLE relational databases is desirable
Data Editor II or II +:
a. B.S. degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries, or a related field and NEFOP fisheries observing experience
b. M.S. degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries, or a related field
c. Experience with NEFOP data collection and editing protocols, UNIX based computers, networked systems and ORACLE relational databases is desirable
Location:
Falmouth Technology Park, Northeast
Fisheries Observer Program office, 25 Bernard St. Jean Drive, Falmouth,
MA. Some travel may be required
Salary: $18-$20/hour + benefits including health,
dental, retirement, paid vacation, sick and holiday leave.
Period
of Performance:
Normal business hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday.
