IDL/Matlab/C Programmer needed in Narragansett, RI
To apply: Send resume and two references to HR@integratedstatistics.com
BACKGROUND
Integrated Statistics is looking for someone to work with the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC). The NEFSC is the research component of National Oceanic and Atmospheric (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for the Northeast Region. NEFSC has an ongoing research program to use remotely-sensed data collected by satellites to monitor the spatial, seasonal, inter-annual and decadal variability in sea surface temperature and phytoplankton productivity of the Northeast United States continental shelf Large Marine Ecosystem (LME), and understand how oceanographic variability influences fisheries productivity and the living marine resources within this region.
2. SCOPE
Integrated Statistics is looking for someone to assist scientists with computer data processing and analyses in order to conduct research and analyses using an extensive existing archive of satellite Sea Surface Temperature data (SST) and satellite chlorophyll data (CHL) to characterize and quantify the seasonal, inter-annual, and decadal variability of SST and CHL in continental shelf water off the Northeast U.S. Coast and in the LME’s.
3. REQUIREMENTS
The individual’s primary work responsibilities shall be devoted to the acquisition, processing, auditing, programming, analysis, modeling, and dissemination of remotely-sensed satellite data The individual shall:
a) Identify, manipulate and analyze information related to database management and computer programming.
b) Identify data related to marine ecology, satellite remote-sensing, fisheries, and marine ecosystems are preferred.
c) Assist scientists with data summaries, scientific manuscript development, software development, and model execution (initialization, parameterization, calibration and validation).
d) The individual must have the capability to program in Interactive Data Language (IDL) and knowledge of Hierarchical Data Format (HDF). Secondary languages and packages include Linux, FORTRAN, C, Excel and web scripting. IDL is similar to Matlab.
e) Bachelors degree in computer science, statistics, math, marine biology or related field with programming experience.
4. SPECIFIC TASKS
a) The individual shall maintain an up-to-date database of satellite SST data for the Northeast U.S. coast (4 km resolution) and a global database that includes the LME sub-regions (9 km resolution). SST data acquired by thermal sensors including the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES), Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS-Aqua and MODIS-Terra) on NOAA and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) satellites will be archived from 1985-present.
b) The contractor shall maintain an up-to-date database of satellite CHL data from NASA ocean color sensors (Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view sensor – SeaWiFS and MODIS-Aqua) from 1997-present. Data will be retrieved for the Northeast U.S. coast (1 km resolution) and the LME sub-regions (9 km resolution).
c) The individual shall use existing analytical procedures to produce Primary Production (PP) data for the Northeast U.S. coast and the LME sub-regions from CHL and SST databases.
d) The individual shall perform statistical analyses on time series of the SST, CHL and PP data and produce monthly and annual climatology maps for the Northeast U.S. coast and the LME sub-regions.
e) The individual shall be or become proficient in IBM-compatible PC workstations configured to operate under Windows XP, Windows 2007 and Unix Centos, and with specialized software based on the IDL (Research Systems, Inc) system, including the NASA satellite data processing software (SeaDAS).
5. LOCATION
Place of performance shall be at the following location:
NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service
Narragansett Laboratory
NOAA/NMFS/NEFSC
28 Tarzwell Drive
Narragansett, RI 02882
6. COMPENSATION
$22-$25/hour + benefits including health, dental, retirement plans, paid vacation, sick, and federal holidays
