Physical Scientist Technician Needed
Integrated
Statistics is looking for an individual to work the Northeast Fisheries Science
Center to participate in the Ocean Acidification Monitoring project in the
northeast U.S. continental shelf.
Activities
include:
1.
Participation
in the Ecosystems Monitoring Program specifically with regards to the
collection, storage, and analysis of water samples for the measurement of
components of the carbon cycle and nutrient cycles.
2.
Participation
in the Econsystem Monitoring Program specifically with regard to the visits of
merchant vessels to re-equip, re-supply, and download data.
3.
The
installation nad maintenance of pCO2 systems on NOAA and non-NOAA vessels that
operate in the northeast region. More
details of the Ecosystem Monitoring Program can be found at: http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/epd/ocean/MainPage/
The
state of "ocean acidification" on the northeast U.S. shelf must be
defined and monitored over time as part of a larger effort to understand the
effect of ocean acidification on marine resources. Program components include monitoring,
laboratory research and modeling all aimed at assessing the potential affect of
ocean acidification on the northeast U.S. continenetal shelf ecosystem. The monitoring activities include the
collection of water samples during NOAA REsearch Vessel surveys and the
installation of underway pCO2 sensors on NOAA and non-NOAA vessels.
Integrated
Statistics is looking for a technician to assist the Project scientists by
conducting and reporting research consistent with the purpose of this project
in the following capacities:
1.
Participate
in the installation, maintenance and repair of water collection systems
(SeaBird 911 CTD) and underway pCO2 systems; installations could be on NOAA
vessels as well as merchant vessels.
2.
Participate
in cruises during which water samples are collected; cruise could involve trips
on merchant vessels as the only scinetist and trips on research cruises as part
of a team of scientists; operations may involve 12 hour watches worked for 1-4
weeks.
3.
Participate
in ship visits during which pCO2 instrumentation is installed, checked, or
repaired. These visits involve manually loading
and unloading equipment and supplies from NAOA and merchant vessels.
4.
Participate
in water sample analysis and shipment of water samples to analytical
laboratories in support of the project.
Qualifications:
1.
Have
sea-going experience on NOAA or UNOLS research vessels
2.
Have
experience maintaining flow-through systems for collection of scientific data
at sea
3.
Experience
deploying, maintaining and storing data from a Conductivity, Temperature, Depth
instruments
4.
Experience
collecting water samples for chemical analysis.
5.
Experience
with set-up, maintenance, and data acquisition with flow-through pCO2 sensors
6.
Ability
to lift and carry heavy (>60lbs) objects
7.
Ability
to work 12 hour shifts at sea for periods of 1-4 weeks.
8.
Three
or more years experience and/or education in chemical oceanography or
environmental chemistry.
