The Social Sciences
Branch conducts research relating to economic and socio-cultural factors of
fisheries management. It also supports
the management process by participating in the development of regulatory
alternatives and analyzing resulting impacts.
Recently, catch
share programs have received an increasing amount of attention. With the recent addition of new programs in
the Northeast and the expectation that more of these types of programs will
emerge, the Social Sciences Branch began a plan to measure the economic and
socio-cultural performance of catch share programs (and, more generally, all NE
fisheries).
Integrated Statistics is seeking an
individual to work with the Social Science Branch of the NEFSC on the
following:
1. Work with the New England and Mid-Atlantic
Fishery Management Councils on Plan Development Teams, as assigned, in the
preparation of Social Impact Assessments;
2. Assist the Social Sciences Branch in
implementing fishery performance measures as needed.
3. Improve the ability of the Social Science
Branch’s efforts to make their research and data more accessible to the public.
Provide Social Impact Analyses
The individual shall
assist the Social Sciences Branch by serving on New England and Mid-Atlantic
Council Plan Development Teams as assigned.
Tasks include providing background information, data summaries, and
analyses for both the Affected Human Environment and Social Impact Assessment
sections of Environmental Impact Assessments and/or Environmental Assessments. Related to this activity, the individual shall
organize existing tools and materials so that Council staff has readily
available resources for conducting their own impact assessments.
Assist in the Development of Fishery
Performance Measures
The individual shall
assist the Social Sciences Branch in implementing its plan for measuring
fishery performance, as assigned. Tasks
could include assistance in developing survey instruments, defining indicators,
summarizing data, and reporting results.
Where appropriate, the contractor may also conduct targeted research
related to performance measures.
Outreach
The individual shall
produce a variety of outreach material about SSB socio-cultural research
initiatives and performance measure results in order to communicate information
to fisheries managers, fishermen, and other stakeholders. A variety of media may be used, including the
web.
Required Experience and Education:
Education:
Master’s Degree or Ph. D, or equivalent experience in Social Science (Anthropology, Sociology, Geography, Political Science, Marine Affairs)
Experience:
Knowledge of socio-cultural issues related to natural resources
Experience gathering social science information and familiarity with using qualitative and quantitative data
Skill in written communication, preparation of technical reports and the ability to communicate orally.
Skill in use of statistical software and experience in the use and analysis of large databases through tools such as SQL or SAS
Compensation: $22/hour + benefits including health, dental, retirement plans, paid vacation, sick and holiday leave
